PAPA HOTEL Dutch Scenery Design is a fledgling game studio founded by Dutch scenery developer Ronald Fleurbaaij. With a deep-rooted passion for flight simulation that traces back to the early days of the game, PAPA HOTEL offers aviation enthousiasts sceneries for Microsoft Flight Simulator that come to life.

Origins

Ronald Fleurbaaij has been a flight simmer from the early days of the game. As a 2-year old sitting on the lap of his father, he was flying aircraft with the arrow keys of their Commodore 64 computer in the early 1980’s. Ronald and his father flown most of the iterations of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Ronald first started to tinker around with scenery development in the early days of FSX. Flying Air Hauler, an add-on that lets you create and run your own airline, his company had grown out of the virtual hangar he was ‘renting’ at his base. At EHLE Lelystad Airport, there was a nice plot of land where he could place some default hangar with Airfield Design Editor (ADE) and create a dedicated apron with a couple of parking spots.

The airfield had extended the runway in real life, which didn’t reflect in the sim at that time. So Ronald decided to try and learn to create ground polygons in combination with the buildings from the Aerosoft scenery he was flying. By the time he’d learned the techniques to build his dream and finished the work, Ronald was flying Prepar3D version 3 and the old FSX scenery got dated quite a bit, so he tried modeling his own buildings.

When the pandemic hit hard in early 2020, renowned flight sim developer Bill Womack shared a series of videos in a forum, announcing an apprenticeship position to work with his iBlueYonder team. Seeing an opportunity to further grow his hobby, Ronald quickly applied and was accepted. He worked on several projects for iBlueYonder, including the Downtown area and GA side of KDAL Dallas Love Field, as well as some other contract work. After finishing latest project for the studio, Ronald decided it was time to start his first solo dream project, going back to where it all began for him: EHLE Lelystad Airport.
